Chapel of the dead - Totenkirchl

Following hiking trail no. 6, you reach the Totenkirchl.

The Totenkirchl lies at 2,186 metres above sea level, at the pass between Villanders and the Sarntal Valley, on the high plateau of the Villanderer Alm, considered one of the largest in Europe. Due to its unique location, the chapel requires regular maintenance and restoration. In its present form it was built in 1899, and the most recent renovation was carried out by the Villanders Schützen. Inside, the larger-than-life Crucifixion group impresses every visitor. A 4 km Way of the Cross with 14 stations leads through the moor meadows of the Villanderer Alm to the chapel; another Way of the Cross also climbs up from the Sarntal side.
