When theology speaks in a woman's voice.
Elisabeth Green, one of the best known ‘feminist’ theologians will be in Merano on Wednesday, March 5, at 7.30 p.m., at the Merano Academy at the invitation of the Merano Academy, Euphur and the Women's Museum in Via Innerhofer 1 to present her latest book ‘Treeology - Theology. In connection: us, God and the tree' published by Gabrielli editore.
The effort of eco-feminist theologies is to overcome dualist thinking that divides reality into oppositions of the sacred/profane type. They propose to adopt an ‘ecological thinking’ of total connection with the planet according to which we are inside nature so that ‘nature’ as ‘a reality external to us’ disappears.
Since the 1970s, theology has been challenged by an ecological crisis that has only worsened since we became aware of it. It has been argued that this crisis had religious, particularly Christian, roots. If Christianity, and consequently theology, was called into question, how could it be remedied? Thus, the 1980s saw the birth of so-called ‘ecotheology’, which has enjoyed new vitality in recent years thanks to the papal encyclical Laudato si'.
Green will hold a dialogue with journalist Francesco Comina.
Green's book is set within a theological research characterised by an ecological sensitivity on the one hand and a feminist consciousness on the other. It proposes to reflect on trees by drawing on some strands of contemporary theology, feminist and ecofeminist theology.
Elizabeth E. Green is pastor emerita of the Evangelical Baptist Christian Union of Italy. A member of the Coordinamento Teologhe Italiane, she has been Burns Fellow at the University of Otago (New Zealand) and visiting professor at the International Baptist Seminary of Rüschlikon (Switzerland), the Waldensian Faculty of Theology (Rome) and the Pontifical Lateran University. He works mainly on theology, feminism and gender. Her latest book is with Gabrielli publishers: Treeology/Theology.
