Starting point: Klammeben mountain station
End point: Klammeben mountain station
Refreshment stops: Klammeben mountain restaurant, Hirzerhütte Alp
Directions
You start your tour at the Klammeben mountain station and hike north-eastwards to the high plateau of Tallner Alm Alp, which lies in a spacious basin surrounded by picturesque alpine meadows (No. 40a).
From Tallner Alm Alp, follow the Gebirgsjägersteig trail, also part of the long-distance hiking trail E5, to the right (eastwards). At first, you walk through the grassy basin; later, the trail leads you across scree fields and rocky sections, climbing quite steeply up to the lowest point of the ridge, the Obere Scharte (E5 long-distance hiking trail).
From Obere Scharte, continue on the Sarntal Valley side to the left (north-eastwards), crossing rocky sections and scree fields, partly descending, until you reach the area below the summit. Here you leave the E5 long-distance hiking trail and follow a wide loop on the left with several hairpin bends leading up to the summit of the Hirzer (trail No. 7).
From the summit of the Hirzer, descend along the same route back to Obere Scharte on the ridge (trail No. 7). From there, follow the Gebirgsjägersteig trail and the E5 long-distance hiking trail once again, descending quite steeply over scree and rocky sections to Tallner Alm Alp (E5 long-distance hiking trail). Afterwards, return to the Klammeben mountain station along the familiar trail (No. 40a).
The route is not suitable for pushchairs or wheelchairs.

A certain degree of freedom from vertigo and surefootedness are required for this mountain tour. Below the ridge there are some unpleasant passages on the rocky path. Between the ridge and the summit, the terrain is steep and somewhat exposed. However, the much-travelled path is quite well maintained wherever this is somehow possible. The path between the ridge and the summit is on the Sarntal side. From the summit you can enjoy a wonderful panoramic view. The summit area is quite narrow and somewhat exposed.
Always stay on marked trails, check the weather conditions before you hike and pay particular attention to snow, wet ground, or slippery sections.
