Mountain Tour to the Königsjoch Peak (2,819 m)

On the old, secret smuggler trails at the border

A beautiful panoramic hike along a relatively quiet trail leading to the Austrian border. The upper section of the route is suitable only for experienced hikers who are sure-footed and have a head for heights. This moderately difficult hike rewards you with stunning panoramic views.

Starting point: Timmelsjoch mountain pass road at km 22.9

Endpoint: Timmelsjoch mountain pass road at km 22.9

Refreshment stop: Oberglanegg Alm Alp

Directions

The hike starts at the parking area of the Oberglanegg Alm Alp (2,025 m), at the 5th hairpin bend above the Hochfirst Inn (Timmelsjoch Road, km 22.9). From there, follow the level trail no. 43A into the valley. After about 15 minutes, you will reach the Oberglanegg Alm Alp (2,060 m).

Above the Oberglanegg Alm Alp, follow trail no. 20 at the junction and initially climb steeply across alpine meadows to a slightly flatter pasture area. Continue following the trail markers and climb up to the left towards a mountain ridge, which eventually leads to a rocky crest. From here, follow the somewhat exposed but easily accessible trail, which is secured with fixed cables in some sections. Continue traversing the steep mountain slope along a narrow trail, repeatedly crossing steep gullies, until you reach the Königsjoch Ridge (2,819 m), on the border between Italy and Austria.

The descent follows the same route as the ascent.

The trail is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.

From the half of the tour the path is quite exposed. On the partly narrow path, surefootedness and a head for heights are a prerequisite. At a passage a little below the Königsjoch the path is secured with steel ropes.

Always stay on marked trails, check the weather conditions before you hike and pay particular attention to snow, wet ground, or slippery sections.
