Reach Merano and Environs in South Tyrol by train

Travelling by train means getting on board and leaning back in the chair, while enjoying the landscapes passing by or while reading a book.

Positioned in the heart of Europe, South Tyrol as well as the Merano and Environs holiday area has a good train network, with connecting trains from Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB), Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), as well as Deutsche Bahn (DB).
Once in South Tyrol, DB/ÖBB train travellers can use the Anschlussticket Südtirol, a ticket that allows travelling with public transportation to get from the train station to their accommodation and vice versa on their day of arrival/departure. This ticket can be purchased directly on the train or at the DB travel centres located at the train stations.

With the ÖBB Nightjet trains, you can travel overnight in a climate-friendly and comfortable way to Merano and Environs from Amsterdam to Innsbruck

An overview of all of the train connections to South Tyrol can be found on thetrainline.com.

Südtirol Bus offers a train station transfer to the booked accommodation and back. All stations along the Brenner line are served hourly. In addition, the stations of Landeck, Innsbruck, Munich and Garmisch are also served several times a day. The collective transfers can be booked online. Bookings are accepted until 1 pm the day before.

How to arrive by train
From Germany

Deutsche Bahn’s EC-trains take you across the Brenner/Brennero within less than four hours.
Munich’s well-connected long-distance stretches allow a comfortable arrival throughout Germany.
A good example is the new fast railway line Berlin – Munich: the ICE Sprinter connects Germany’s capital and Munich within four hours.

Travelling by train does not only alleviate stress: the DB ticket Saver Fare or Super Saver Fare Europe takes you to South Tyrol at a price starting from 29,90 €.
From Switzerland

Experience a pleasant journey with the Railjet Express & Eurocity arriving from Switzerland via Innsbruck and Brenner/Brennero. From Zurich, Basle or Geneva SBB trains run several times daily.

Alternatively, enjoy the ride through the Swiss National Park and the picturesque Val Müstair. This journey starts from Landquart with the Rhaetian Railway to Zernez and then taking the PostBus to Mals/Malles in Vinschgau Valley. From there the so-called ‘Vinschgerbahn’ takes you to Meran/Merano and environs.

Another option is the Südtirol-Express, a comfortable Swiss long-distance bus connection, which from spring to autumn drives from Switzerland to South Tyrol every Saturday.
From Austria

The Eurocity trains from ÖBB/DB take you from Kufstein (Austria) via Innsbruck and Brenner/Brennero directly to Bolzano/Bozen.

The central station of Innsbruck, which functions as the transport node point for local and long-distance traffic, connects South Tyrol with Austria’s eastern and western regions. The combination of the ÖBB Railjet and the Eurocity train enables the arrival from for example Vienna or Bregenz with only one change of trains.

If booked in time, the ÖBB Sparschiene-tickets take you in direction of South Tyrol for a more favourable price.
