The Merano Grape Festival: A Parade of Tradition and Splendor

The Marling apple crown: the impressive wagon

Every year on the 3rd weekend in October (2024: 19th & 20th October) the big grape festival takes place in Merano.

Since 1886, the Merano Grape Festival has celebrated the harvest season while staying true to its roots. This event blends tradition with modern elements, inviting you to immerse yourself in a weekend full of culture and flavors.

Enjoy traditional folk music, sometimes presented in classical form and sometimes in surprising contemporary arrangements. The musical program is accompanied by the culinary highlights of South Tyrolean cuisine, reflecting the unique blend of northern and southern influences – cosmopolitan, just like the city of Merano.

A special highlight is the Merano Market, where local products and award-winning wines from the Burgraviato region take center stage. On Sunday, the festival reaches its peak with the traditional parade of music bands and festive groups through the historic town center.

Preparations for the Grand Parade: The Making of the Marlinger Apple Crown

In the days leading up to the Merano Grape Festival, the Marlengo Apple Crown is prepared for this important annual event. Since 1984, the float has been under the ownership of local farmer and President of the Tourist Association, Alois Arquin, who continues the old tradition.

On Thursday afternoon before the big event the day after, volunteers cut and prepare the boxwood from dense bushes, decorating the surface of the vehicle in green. The baskets are already in position. The green, leafy carpet is affixed by six women, while the men procure ivy and blackberry branches, from which garlands are intertwined.

On the Friday, more than 600 kg of “Jonagold” apples are loaded into the waiting baskets, supplied by the COFRUM Apple Farmers Cooperative in Marlengo. No less than 14 kg nails are also used for the decorations.
On Saturday, it is the turn of the gardeners. The gardeners decorate the float with 700 dianthus flowers, donated by the Merano Tourism Association. All in all, getting the float ready keeps a number of people busy for at least three days. Over 5 m in length and 2.20 m wide, this remarkable float weighs 2.3 tons and is towed by four sturdy Haflinger horses.

Cantina Merano Winery in Marling – tradition and quality 🍇🍷

Cantina Merano Winery is deeply rooted in our land. Tradition, landscape, and viticulture have always been closely linked in the Merano region. The foundation was laid in 1901 with just a few winegrowers. Today, after the merger of the Burggräfler Winery and the Cantina Merano Winery, we count 350 members.

Where does the harvest come from? The region – two contrasting wine regions 🏔️
The Merano area and the Vinschgau offer exciting contrasts. From the extreme alpine conditions in the Vinschgau, with large temperature fluctuations and steep vineyards, to the gentle, sun-kissed hills around Merano – the best grape varieties thrive here.

What makes the wine so special? 🍷✨
Quality in the vineyard, quality in the work, and quality in the glass – these are our highest priorities. The origin and provenance of the grapes must always be recognizable in the glass. The wine should stay true to its "roots" – it’s about transparency, character, and authenticity. Each bottle of Merano wine becomes a special experience.

What’s your favorite type of wine? 🍇🍷

Frost protection – safeguarding apple blossoms 🌸🍏

Low temperatures in spring can damage delicate apple blossoms and threaten the harvest. ❄️ The solution? Frost protection spraying! During cold snaps, blossoms are sprayed with water, which freezes into a layer of ice, protecting them from the frost. 🌱🍏 Thanks to this method, apple farmers can protect their crops and minimize frost damage. A fascinating natural phenomenon! 🌿🍎
