Apple blossom season in Dorf Tirol and Merano

The highlight of spring in South Tyrol

The apple blossom season is the absolute highlight of spring in South Tyrol. Between the end of March and beginning of May, the apple blossom transforms the region’s orchards into a pink and white sea of colour.

Water flows through the irrigation channels. Buzzing bees pollinate the blossoms. Birds twitter in the sunshine. Nature welcomes you for long walks.

Depending on the location, temperature, altitude and apple variety, the apple blossom season begins between the end of March and the end of April. Starting in the lowlands, day by day the blossom drifts further towards Merano/Meran and then into the Vinschgau/Val Venosta valley.

In Dorf Tirol/Tirolo, the blossom starts to bloom at the lower levels on the outskirts of Merano around a week earlier than at the higher altitude of the Hochmuth cable car valley station. This means that it is often possible to enjoy the blossom for longer than in other areas.

Depending on the weather conditions, the blossom lasts for around 2 weeks, although this may be shorter if there is heavy rainfall or strong winds. By the second week in May at the latest, the magical carpet of blossoms is gone.
Ice blossoms: The ice protects the flowers from freezer burn.

How do frost protection sprinkler systems protect the apple blossom?
Farmers protect the blossom from frost damage by using frost protection sprinkler systems. As the water freezes on the blossoms, what is known as crystallisation heat is released. This occurs when the water changes its aggregate state from liquid to solid. The ice then wraps itself like a protective armour around the blossoms and keeps the temperature at zero degrees. On cold mornings the frozen blossoms provide a fascinating natural spectacle.
