General rules

To make your vacation with your four-legged friend unforgettable

If you want to take your furry friend on vacation to South Tyrol, Naturns is a must-visit. Here, you and your dog will feel like you're in paradise. The area offers a variety of hikes and walks specifically tailored to dog owners. Whether it is short walks through apple orchards or more challenging mountain hikes, Naturns offers something to make every dog happy.

But what do you need to consider when entering South Tyrol with your dog? In general, your dog needs an EU pet passport and a valid rabies vaccination. A microchip identification is also required. If you are entering from a non-EU country, a blood test to check the vaccination protection must also be done. Of course, you should also be considerate of other vacationers and locals, keeping an eye on your dog and cleaning up after them. But if you follow these simple rules, nothing will stand in the way of an unforgettable vacation with your loyal companion.

Public transport

Getting around by bus and train

If you would like to take your dog with you on holiday to South Tyrol and plan to use public transport, there are a few rules you should be aware of. In general, guide dogs and small animals that can be transported in a cage or carrier measuring a maximum of 70×30×50 cm, or that can be carried in your arms, can travel free of charge. If your dog does not meet these criteria, it must wear a muzzle, be kept on a leash, and may not occupy a seat. Before travelling, you need to purchase a single ticket for your dog (a child’s ticket can be purchased for the dog). The ticket must be validated before the journey (on the platform if you are travelling by train, or on the bus).

Naturns in South Tyrol is an ideal place to explore the mountains with your four-legged friend. Numerous cable cars and mountain lifts in Naturns and the surrounding area offer the opportunity to ascend together into the alpine mountain world. The dream of unforgettable views and fresh mountain air can become a reality for your dog too! As a general rule, dogs must wear a muzzle and be kept on a leash. Naturally, they must not disturb or inconvenience other passengers or cause any damage. Dogs usually receive a reduced fare for the mountain lift journey up and down, and some lift operators even transport your four-legged friend free of charge. Afterwards, you can enjoy the breathtaking views together!

🐑🏔️ Transhumance in the Schnalstal Valley – a living tradition

When the sheep return from their summer pastures to the Schnalstal Valley, a centuries-old tradition comes to life.🐑✨ Transhumance is much more than an impressive sheep drive – it is a living part of the region’s cultural heritage and history.

This year, the return of the flocks will once again be celebrated with traditional shepherds’ festivals featuring music, local specialities and genuine South Tyrolean hospitality. 🎶🍻

📍 Saturday, 12 September 2026 – Vernagt
From 11:00 am, shepherds and drovers will be welcomed at the lake with a large traditional festival. Enjoy traditional music and local specialities in a unique alpine setting.

📍 Sunday, 13 September 2026 – Kurzras
A traditional shepherds’ festival will already be underway from 11:00 am near the “Schofschoad” (collection point). The flock is expected to arrive in Kurzras between 3:00 and 4:00 pm.

Join us as thousands of sheep make their way back to the valley and experience one of Val Senales’ most fascinating living traditions!❤️
