Between Mountains and Sunshine: Apple Growing in the Vinschgau Valley

A harmony of climate, landscape and passion

Set in the sun-filled Vinschgau Valley, Naturns and Plaus combine ideal natural conditions for apple growing. The alpine-Mediterranean climate, the sheltered altitude and abundant sunshine create perfect conditions for growth. Yet it is the people who truly make the difference: with experience, passion and skilled hands, the farmers of Naturns and Plaus care for their orchards every day. The result is apples of outstanding flavour and top quality, deeply rooted in the region.

The Location

Naturns and Plaus lie in the sunny Lower Vinschgau Valley and are among South Tyrol’s best apple-growing regions. The orchards extend over altitudes of approximately 500 to 1,000 meters. This special location provides ideal conditions: abundant sunlight, crisp mountain air, and a sheltered valley where the apple trees thrive.

The Microclimate
A unique combination of many hours of sunshine, low rainfall, and the characteristic Vinschgau Valley wind shapes the climate in Naturns and Plaus. This microclimate allows the fruit to ripen slowly, giving the apples their natural sweetness and an intense, even coloration.

Natural Temperature Fluctuations
Especially in the weeks before harvest, the marked differences between warm days and cool nights become noticeable. These temperature fluctuations promote the coloring of the apples and play a key role in developing their balanced flavor.

Frost Irrigation – Protecting the Blossoms
In spring, when nighttime temperatures drop to around freezing, farmers in Naturns and Plaus use frost irrigation. The delicate blossoms are coated with a thin layer of ice, which protects them from freezing. This proven technique highlights the importance of experience and expertise in apple cultivation.
From Blossom to Enjoyment: The Journey of the Apple

Just a few months ago, the apple orchards were a pink sea of blossoms, and only a short time later, the ripe apples are harvested by our farmers. But before they reach your shopping baskets, these delicious fruits still have a long journey ahead. Don’t worry: thanks to careful work, you can enjoy your favorite apples all year round.

Pruning
After the harvest, there’s no winter break for our farmers. They immediately prune the trees to make room for new fruitwood, ensuring the quality of the next harvest.

Planting
In spring, new apple orchards are planted. Farmers carefully select the varieties that are best suited to the location, climate, and soil.

Blossom Time – The Great Spring Awakening
From mid-April to early May, the orchards bloom under the warm spring sun, creating a true sea of blossoms. Busy bees pollinate the flowers, while farmers activate frost irrigation during cold nights: a protective layer of ice shields the delicate blossoms from freezing.

Hand Thinning - germ. "zupfen"
To ensure only the best apples grow, farmers remove excess fruit by hand. This gives each remaining apple enough space, sunlight, and nutrients.

Harvest
Depending on the variety, harvest begins at different times. Often multiple pickings are necessary to ensure that every apple reaches full ripeness. Only the best fruits ultimately make it into the cooperative’s cold storage.

In the Cooperative – Final Steps
Say cheese: each apple is photographed 60 times in just a few seconds.
Like with like: a computer program sorts the apples by size, color, and quality and directs them to the correct conveyor line.
Packed and stored: the apples are placed in crates and sent to a temporary storage area.
Final check and off they go: before being loaded onto trucks, the apples undergo one last quality inspection.
Then they begin their journey into the world – ready to delight you.

Merano in inverno🤍
