The mild climate and terroir make Merano/Meran and its surroundings a wine-producing region. Indigenous wines such as Lagrein and Vernatsch enjoy great prestige. The local red wines of Merano/Meran bear the Italian DOC quality seal.
On-site guided tours and tasting of local wines are offered by wine cellars and at the large cantina Merano Winery, which combines 360 small wine producers within a single cooperative.
The Rametz Castle Winery has also made a name for itself, with its vines still trained in the traditional pergola style using chestnut wood across the vineyards surrounding the castle – as the only winery directly in Merano, it also features a wine museum and on-site tastings. Those who wish to taste and purchase the region's wines and sparkling wines will find the City.Vinothek of Cantina Merano right in the heart of the city: in the historic premises of the former Kellerei Algund, between Merano's arcades and Galilei Street, architect Werner Tscholl has overseen the restoration of a sparkling wine cellar with an impressive vinothek – a special place to discover, taste and enjoy. The surrounding villages complete the picture: throughout the Merano hinterland, numerous independent wine growers and estates maintain a centuries-old winemaking tradition and invite visitors to explore.
