Palm Sunday is the sixth and last Sunday of Lent and the Sunday before Easter. Palm Sunday commemorates the festive entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem. As a sign of his kingship, the people cheered him and scattered palm branches.
Traditionally, on Friday and Saturday evening before Palm Sunday in Partschins/Parcines, the traditional South Tyrolean "Palmbuschn" are bound for Palm Sunday.
For the palm bush binding the "Schützen company" of Partschins meet on one of the nearby farms and bindings until late at night.
It is the custom to bind seven natural materials for God's protection and blessing. Among them are boxwood, ivy, cranewitt and "Hoadern" (flower Erika).
The bundles are then blessed by the priest on Palm Sunday and distributed to the churchgoers after the Holy Mass, in memory of the festive entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
At home, the palm bush is kept on the crucifix hanging on the wall.
The bundles are set on fire in the oven or stove during thunderstorms and storms and are meant to ward off disaster.
