The Peter Mitterhofer Typewriter Museum (Schreibmaschinenmuseum) in Parcines/Partschins is named after its inventor. In the museum, there are as many as 2,000 exhibits documenting the evolution of the typewriter from its humble beginnings until the advent of the computer. The exhibition includes 1,400 machines including rarities such as the Enigma, an early 20th Century German-made machine mainly used to encrypt military communications.
Peter Mitterhofer
An accomplished carpenter and inventor, Peter Mitterhofer was born and lived in Parcines throughout most of his life from 1822 – 1893. After completing his first typewriter in 1864 he built another and subsequently received an Imperial grant from Vienna before building another three prototypes. The first two were almost entirely made out of wood with needles used to punch the characters through paper. The three remaining prototypes were made out of metal where the characters were instead typed onto paper. Unfortunately, Mitterhofer did not live to see his invention enter production and died in relative obscurity.
