Traffic rules in Italy
Drivers are required to have safety vests in their cars in Italy, Austria and Germany. Cars are required to drive on dipped headlights during the day on Italian motorways and country roads (outside built-up areas). The maximum speed is 90 km/h on state roads and 130 km/h on motorways. There’s an extensive network of filling stations and almost one in two sells LPG. In general, in the major towns and cities parking is only permitted in the spaces provided. Short-stay car parks, the majority of which are Pay & Display, are marked with a blue border. These are complemented by specially designated car parks and underground parking in most places. Free parking can often be found outside towns and sometimes there’s a shuttle bus into the centre.

Renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13

As part of an extensive renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13, traffic restrictions will come into effect starting January 1, 2025.

The renovation of the Lueg Bridge on the Brenner Motorway A13 will begin on January 1, 2025.
To carry out the renovation as efficiently as possible, the bridge will only be open to one lane in both directions. However, on particularly busy
days, the bridge may be temporarily opened to two lanes to facilitate traffic flow.

On busy days, the bridge will be open to two lanes in both directions. Cars may use both lanes. However, vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are subject to special rules: they must drive in the left lane, which is the inside lane of the bridge, to reduce the load on the structure. A monitoring system has been installed to ensure compliance with this rule.

The monitoring system is based on a scale integrated into the road, which detects during driving if vehicles weighing more than 3.5 tons are incorrectly in the right lane. If this is the case, the vehicle will be diverted before the bridge for reweighing. It will then be directed to the correct lane (left lane). These checks take place in Nößlach and Brenner and are carried out by staff.

Yes, the Lueg Bridge can be avoided either by traveling via the Reschen Pass or by using the railway network. The railway line over the Brenner Pass will not be restricted during the renovation. Information on train connections can be found here:

The first bridge pillar is expected to be fully renovated within two and a half to three years. From this point on, two lanes will be available again. The entire bridge is expected to be completed by the year 2030.

From September 2024 to the end of 2026, the Reschen Road B180 will be undergoing construction to build a rockfall gallery between Kajetansbrücke/Pfunds and Nauders. During this period, the road will be closed at certain times.

The Reschen/Resia Road is open to traffic again as of today.
In the construction area, a single-lane traffic system regulated by traffic lights is in place.
On May 5–9, May 12–16, and May 19–23, there will be daytime closures from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM and from 1:30 PM to 6:00 PM. During these times, traffic will be diverted via the Engadine Road and the Martinsbruck Road.
Trucks, vehicles with trailers longer than 6.5 meters, and buses longer than 13 meters are not allowed to use this route and must take a wide detour or wait until the road reopens.

During closures, traffic will be rerouted via Switzerland. The detour runs along the Engadin Road (B184) and Martinsbruck Road (B185). This route adds approximately 6.6 km to the journey and may take about 10 minutes longer, depending on traffic.
