The Falschauer Biotope in Lana

The natural habitat in the Falschauer river delta

Where the Falschauer/Valsura stream flows into the Etsch/Adige River, you'll find the Falschauer Biotope in Lana and its surroundings near Meran/Merano. Covering approximately 32 hectares, this varied wetland landscape includes ponds, wetlands and floodplain forests. The protected nature reserve provides a valuable habitat for numerous animal and plant species and preserves part of the Adige Valley's original river landscape.

In the past, extensive marshes, pools and floodplain forests covered large parts of the Etschtal/Valle dell'Adige valley. Over the centuries, settlements, agriculture and economic development significantly changed this landscape. In 1979, the remaining Falschauer delta was designated as a protected area to preserve this special natural habitat for the future.

Today, the biotope is an important habitat, refuge and resting place for numerous bird species. More than 200 bird species have been recorded here, including around 50 species that have also bred in the area. Amphibians, reptiles, fish and aquatic insects also find suitable habitats here. The different bodies of water, riverbanks and floodplain forests contribute to the area's rich biodiversity.

You can explore the wetland landscape at your own pace along the publicly accessible paths. With a little patience and luck, you might spot different birds or hear frogs calling. The Falschauer Biotope is a rewarding destination for anyone interested in South Tyrol's nature and wildlife.

During your visit, please stay on the designated paths and respect the protected habitats of the animals and plants.
