Hiking Trails in Lana and Surroundings near Merano

Walks from between 300 to 3,000 m altitude in Merano and Environs

In the Lana Region, close to the spa town of Merano, hikers can choose from a wide variety of routes – from leisurely walks to panoramic mountain hikes.
Starting directly in Lana, promenades and themed trails lead through the surrounding area: along the Sculpture Trail, the Länd Promenade, through the wild and romantic Gaul Gorge, or along the Brandis Waalweg to the Brandis Waterfall. Those wishing to get to know the Lana Region better should start with the Aichberg Trail. This themed route above Lana tells the story of the area's history, landscape and traditions, while offering insights into fruit and wine cultivation and the region’s distinctive cultural landscape.

Völlan also offers numerous hiking opportunities of varying difficulty levels. Situated slightly higher than the valley floor of Lana, the village is an excellent starting point for easy walks such as the Chestnut Experience Trail, the circular hike to the panoramic Church of St. Hippolyt, or more demanding tours towards Gall and onward to the 2,434-metre-high Laugen Peak.

In Tscherms, the Marling Waalweg is among the most popular hiking routes. Those wishing to hike from the village up to Vigiljoch, however, will need stamina and good physical fitness. On the opposite side of the valley, trails from Burgstall and Gargazon lead up to the porphyry slopes at the foot of the Tschögglberg plateau. Particularly popular are the Farm Trail above Burgstall and the short ascent to the Kröll Tower in Gargazon. More ambitious hikers can continue on foot up to the Tschögglberg – a rewarding tour for experienced hikers in good condition.

Well-signposted and clearly marked trails make it easy to find your way around the Lana Region. Thanks to the mild climate, the hiking season begins as early as March and continues well into late autumn.
